Homoeopathy is a complete system of medicine developed by the German physician and chemist, Dr Samuel Hahnemann, in the 1800s.
What is Homoeopathy?
Hahnemann found that illnesses could be treated by using small, specially prepared doses of substances that are prescribed on the ‘like cures like’ principle.
How it works
A homoeopathic medicine may come in a liquid drop dose or in small ‘pillules’ that are dissolved under the tongue. Here is an example of using the ‘like cures like’ principle: coffee stimulates the nervous system, especially in sensitive people. Homoeopathic doses of coffee (Coffea) may be given to a person who is having trouble sleeping to still their active mind and body.
Most commonly treated conditions
Homoeopathic treatment may help in almost any condition – short-lived acute conditions and long-term chronic illnesses – at any age. It is gentle for helping with babies’, children’s and adult’s problems, whether behavioural, developmental or physical, as it is easy to administer and does not interfere with medications.
What to expect at your first appointment
Initial consultations may take up to an hour or more; acute complaints may take half that time. You will be asked to provide information on current symptoms and past medical history. You may also be asked questions regarding your diet, sleep, lifestyle, and any mental and emotional issues. Physical examinations may be required according to your complaint.
How long does it take to treat a condition?
It could take minutes, hours, days, weeks or longer. The homoeopath may work with one or more different homeopathic medicines over time.
